Box Score 1
Box Score 2

Fresno Pacific scored six runs in the 8th inning to erase a 5-3 San Francisco State lead and take game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Sunbirds then hit three home runs to back up Matt Mazzoni for an 8-1 victory in game two, improving to 8-2 on the season.

Steven Lozier homered in each game, finishing the day 4-for-8 with three RBI. Karlan Andrews, Blaine Taylor and Michael Vaughn also homered for the Sunbirds. FPU also saw exceptional defense from the shortstop position by Alec Mehrten.

The Gators (1-3) held a 5-3 lead in game one heading to the bottom of the eighth inning but the Sunbird bats would come alive for six runs off SFSU reliever Eric Watts. Gator starter Ryan DeJesus had held the Sunbirds in check for the most part until that point, striking out nine in five innings and giving up three runs.

Vaughn started off the rally with a single before Robbie De La Cruz doubled down the right-field line to put runners on second and third. A John Koretoff single would score one. Scott Laird then walked to load the bases before David Hawes hit a deep fly to center that advanced each runner and tied the game at five.

Kevin Magill's single up the middle gave the Sunbirds the lead, 7-5 as two came across, and Andrews would follow with a two-run homer to make it 9-5.

Starting pitcher Derek Benny went six innings for FPU, striking out eight, but would get the no-decision. Aaron Kirkpatrick pitched well in three innings of relief to earn the win.

Mazzoni got the nod in game two and went five innings giving up just one run and striking out four. FPU took the lead in the second inning after a De La Cruz double and singles by Laird and Andrews.

Laird, who would finish 3-for-3, singled to start the fourth inning as well before Taylor hit a towering shot to right for his first homer of the season, putting the Sunbirds up 5-1.

FPU added three more in the fifth, highlighted by homers from Lozier and Vaughn. Travis Morgan added a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 8-1.

The Sunbirds will look to continue their success against NCAA Division II opponents (4-1 this year) on Monday as they host Cal State Stanislaus at 5 pm.
