Box Score
AZUSA, Calif. - #2-seed Concordia defeated #5-seed Fresno Pacific 3-2 on a walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th in FPU's first game of the double-elimination GSAC Tournament on Tuesday. The Sunbirds (26-26) fall into the losers bracket where they'll face top seed Azusa Pacific, who fell 12-5 to #6-seed Westmont earlier in the day.
FPU took a 2-0 lead after a
Travis Morgan solo homer in the third inning but the Eagles would score one in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie it.
Matt Mazzoni tossed eight innings giving up one earned run and striking out five, but Concordia's Brent Clapper countered with a 10-inning, 11-strikeout complete game.
The Sunbirds got on the board first as
Karlan Andrews began the game with a double before scoring after a
Scott Laird bunt single and CUI error.
Alec Mehrten followed with a single, but a double play and a strikeout would strand a runner in scoring position.
FPU left two on base in the fourth, but CUI's Clapper was in the zone from that point on.
Blaine Taylor finished 2-for-4 as the only Sunbird with a multi-hit game. He would reach second base with no outs in the top of the tenth, but three straight fly outs would end the threat.
Michael Rivera entered the game for FPU in the ninth and struck out two batters in a scoreless inning, but the Eagles would get a run across in the next inning on a walk, an error and a single.
Concordia (34-16) moves to the winners bracket to face the winner of #3 Biola and #4 The Master's.
FPU will face APU at 11 am. The GSAC champion Cougars swept the four-game series from the Sunbirds earlier this season.
