Box Score
Fresno Pacific saw its pitching decimated by Azusa Pacific on Friday as the Sunbirds suffered their most lopsided loss of the season 21-5 at APU.
Starter
Wilson Ashford was touched up for eight runs while six Sunbird relievers each gave up at least two. APU (16-5, 5-1 GSAC) hit four homeruns in the win and got a complete game from starting pitcher Zachary Hedges.
Alan Sandoval went 3-for-4 to lead the Sunbird lineup.
Karlan Andrews and
Matt Fox each doubled in the loss.
The Sunbirds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on the Andrews leadoff double and an
Alec Mehrten RBI groundout, but it was all bad news from there. APU scored three in the bottom half of the inning and added four in the second. The Cougars would score seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 15-2 and would extend the lead to 21-2 before three FPU runs in the ninth.
APU more than made up for three errors on the day, getting three hits apiece from Brent Warren, Jordan Leyland, Johnathan Erb and JC Aguayo. Erb and Warren homered as well, with Erb finishing with a game-high five RBI.
The 21 runs given up by FPU tied a program worst. The Sunbirds gave up 21 runs in a 21-14 loss at Concordia on May 8, 2008.
FPU falls to 13-10, 4-6 in GSAC play, and has now lost five of its last six since catcher
Michael Vaughn went down with an injury. The two teams play a doubleheader tomorrow in Fresno beginning at 11 am with
Matt Mazzoni and
Derek Benny taking the mound for FPU.
