Sea Lions spoil senior night in double overtime

Box Score

Point Loma's Nicole Craft scored seven and half minutes into the second overtime to break a scoreless tie and spoil Fresno Pacific's senior night on Thursday in Fresno.

After 106 minutes of scoreless play, the Sea Lions (12-4-1, 9-3-1 PacWest) were awarded a free kick following a yellow card and took advantage, playing it into the box where Jessica Van Loo would come up with the ball and head it into the air for Craft, who came in from the left side and redirected the ball into the net.

That goal would spoil an otherwise stellar all-around performance from the Sunbirds (5-6-6, 5-4-4 PacWest) particularly on the defensive end where Colleen Rooney and Caressa Archie controlled play on the back line. On the offensive side however, the Sunbirds had plenty of chances but a goal would elude them throughout the match.

"I'm proud of the team for the effort tonight," said head coach Erik Farfan. "We felt that we did enough in regulation to get the result. Unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize on our opportunities despite a lot of momentum in our favor. We had some really good looks and when you play a team like Point Loma and you don't capitalize on your chances it's going to end up costing you."

It was senior night for Rooney and five other seniors playing in their final home game at Ramirez Field.

“We battled tonight," said Rooney. "The past few years we've played against [Point Loma], we've always really played our hearts out and just come up short. I really felt like tonight we handled this game and we took over and we were able to work as a team and show what we're capable of. We just got unlucky and they're a good team and they made a good play in the end."

Senior Jae Slocum did a good job of getting the Sunbirds chances, leading the team with five shots. Sarah King made a couple nice saves behind the strong defensive play of Archie, Rooney, Dora Vega, Clara Buettner and others to preserve the shutout into the overtimes.

It was the final home match for Vega, who began her Sunbird career back in 2004 and finished out her eligibility this season. It was also senior night for Kathy Barreto and Ariel Sanders, both of whom gave the team solid minutes, as well as Demi Hamilton who suffered an injury in the first half, adding to the Sunbirds' offensive woes.

The Sunbirds wrap up the 2012 season this Saturday on the road at Notre Dame de Namur (7-9-1, 6-6-1 PacWest).

“We're looking to finish out the season with a good showing," said Rooney. "We might not be in the position rank-wise that we'd like to be in, but we're still going to work our hardest to show what we've accomplished and how we've bonded as a team."
