LONG BEACH, Calif. - After a thrilling weekend, the PacWest Conference announced that Fresno Pacific women's soccer earned Co-Team of the Week coming off their shutout win over Concordia University Irvine. With three straight victories under their belt, the Sunbirds are surging at the perfect time as they make their push toward the PacWest Championships.
The Sunbirds are officially 3-7-5 overall and 2-2-4 in conference play. Despite a challenging start to the season, the Lady 'Birds have rallied in the past three matches, defeating opponents by a large margin. Ultimately, the impressive shutout over conference leader CUI led to their PacWest Team of the Week honor. Concordia sat at the number two spot in the PacWest standings and was also receiving votes on the national level, but this did not deter the Sunbirds.
Using the high energy from their senior night ceremony, the 'Birds wasted no time getting a point on the board. Freshman
Bailey Roberson was the first to score, sending a ball narrowly between the post and the goalkeeper to boost FPU ahead of CUI in the 19
th minute. Goalkeeper
Katelyn Gonzalez and the defensive line did a wonderful job keeping the Golden Eagles at bay throughout the match. Despite varius shot attempts by CUI, the game concluded with the Sunbirds maintaining a scoreless game, marking the team's fourth shutout of the season.
With second-year head coach
Roberto Hernandez at the helm, the 'Birds are spreading their wings as they progress closer to the PacWest Championships. The top four teams qualify for the conference championships, which means FPU's final two matches could rattle the standings as they are now.
NEXT UP: The 'Birds travel to Biola on Thursday, November 4th for the second-to-last match of the regular season.
