One of the greatest runners in the history of the Fresno Pacific cross country and track & field programs,
Jim Hartig holds multiple school records that stand to this day. After steadily improving during the early portion of his career, Hartig would completely rewrite the record books during a senior season that redefined the standard for distance running at FPU.
Â
As the MVP of a talented 1975 cross country team, Hartig would set the school record for both 5-mile (24:21) and 6-mile (30:44) races, and post the third-fastest mark in a 4-mile race (20:21) while earning NAIA all-region honors and qualifying for nationals. His marks in the 5-mile and 6-mile races still rank as the fastest all-time.
Â
Hartig carried the momentum from his remarkable cross country season into the track & field season. Showing extraordinary versatility across multiple distances, Hartig set the school record in three marquee distance events: the 1500m (3:54.24), the 5K (14:38.74) and the 10K (30:02.34).
Â
He won the region championship in the 10K, breaking the school record, before breaking his own record and setting the current mark at the NAIA national championship meet, where he earned All-American honors by placing third in the nation.
Â
Hartig also posted school records on the track in the mile (4:15.6), 2-mile (9:06.6) and 3-mile (14:11.8). He also bettered his 6-mile time from the cross country season by running a school-record 29:08 on the track. He was awarded the team's "most outstanding track athlete" honor as a junior and as a senior.
Â
His marks in the 5K and 10K still stand today atop the all-time records, while his 1500 record stood for 16 years and now ranks second all-time. Hartig has gone on to have a very successful career as a teacher in the Clovis Unified School District.
