SACRAMENTO – Â
Brie Courseault's two school records highlighted Fresno Pacific's performances at the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday. The Sunbirds, who were competing against several Division I and Division II teams, set numerous season and lifetime bests at Hornet Stadium.
Â
"We really enjoy going north to Sacramento State for this meet every year and competing against very strong DI and DII competition. We had a good showing today and are motivated by our measurable progress," said head coach
Ray Winter. "Brie had an indescribably good day, with an individual and relay school record on the books, and nearly a second individual record. When one of us goes big like that, it elevates the whole team. It was a thrill to watch."
Â
The performance of the meet for the Sunbirds came from Courseault, as the sophomore broke her own school record in the 100m dash at 11.96. She became the first female in school history to go under 12 seconds at the distance. Earlier in the day, Courseault anchored the women's 4x100m relay to a school record and national B-standard, as the 'Birds closed at 46.73. The team was made up of
Kyra Bailey,
Danae Manibog,
Kala McClain and Courseault.
Â
Other highlights on the day included a very fast 200m from Courseault and McClain, as both ran within hundredths of a second of their lifetime bests. Courseault crossed the finish line at 24.31, which is a B-standard, while McClain closed at 25.31.
Â
A trio of freshmen also excelled for the Sunbirds on the day. Manibog had a great outdoor 400m opener, running Fresno Pacific's third-fastest time in history in 56.61.
Annie Regier also had a solid day in the high jump in her first competition back from an ankle sprain. Her 5-05.00 clearance made it clear that she is prepared to better her 5-07.00 mark jumped in January.
Faith Jensen also delivered a season best 36-06.75 in the triple jump.
Â
A number of Sunbird women ran in the 1500m, led by senior captain
Vicki Arevalo who was just .15 seconds outside of the top ten record books, coming in at 4:55.28. Another large group of 'Birds ran the grueling 10k on Friday night, and were led by sophomore
Gracielita Bastidas (40:33.05).
Â
Saturday night was finished off with a season best in the 4x400m relay at 3:52.57 for a second-place overall finish, run by Bailey, Manibog, Courseault and
Cathrin Wicke.
Â
There were also a number of big highlights on the men's side. The final race of the meet concluded on the highest note for the 4x400m relay, as the Sunbirds won in a season best time of 3:16.80. The relay was run by the same group that set the school record last season (
Lawrence Cairo Jr.,
Armon Plummer,
Scott Hickam and
Michael Taylor).
Â
Hickam, a senior captain, continued to round into mid-season form with a strong fifth-place finish in the 400m hurdles in a season best 53.83. Taylor, likewise, progressed on the season in the 400m dash (48.77) with a fourth-place finish.
Â
Season bests were also set by
Alex Torres (4:02.03),
Adam Gonzalez-Angulo (4:02.39) and
Chandler Maciel (4:08.85) in the 1500m. On the field, junior
Julian Gonzalez had a lifetime best in the javelin (147-10).
Â
FPU will now head to the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday, March 24 in San Luis Obispo.
