Sunbirds Drop Final Two Games of Season to Sea Lions

FRESNO, Calif.  – The Fresno Pacific University baseball team fell in both games of Tuesday's doubleheader, dropping the opener 10-5 before ending the season on a 4-1 loss. The Sunbirds finish the season with a record of 19-26, including a 16-20 record in PacWest Conference action.

Michael Warkentin, McKay France and Baron Bower each contributed a pair of base hits in the opener, with the latter teaming up with Braden Frankfort for four of the team's five RBI. Designated hitter Kellen Sheppard went 3-for-3 and added three runs for the visiting Sea Lions, and shortstop Adam Rios added four RBI from the eight-spot in the batting order.

Each team used three pitchers in the first game, with Trevor Abshire picking up the victory for Point Loma after allowing two runs over six innings. John Thomas picked up the save in his season debut, retiring eight of the nine batters he faced.

For Fresno Pacific, Nic Boatman turned in six innings but took the loss after allowing six runs on seven base hits. Carson Schellenberg and Jonathan Molina combined for the final nine outs, with each surrendering two runs.

Bower started the scoring in the first inning of the finale, launching his fourth homer of the year over the wall in left field. After the Sunbirds issued three walks in the inning, the Sea Lions needed just two hits to spark a four-run third and take their final lead of the series.

Kellen Sheppard went the distance, allowing just one run on six hits while picking up seven strikeouts en route to his ninth win. Tyler Rumbaugh lasted just 2.2 innings for the Sunbirds, but relievers Zach Fleeman, Tanner Irwin and Nic Garcia totaled the final 4.1 chapters without allowing a run to cross the plate.

Offensively, Colby Kaneshiro recorded two hits for the Sea Lions, while catcher Mike Gordner drove in a pair of runs. Tristen Alvarez gave the Sunbirds two base hits, with Bower's home run holding up as the team's lone RBI.

FPU ends the season with at least 400 hits as a team for the fifth consecutive season, averaging just south of nine hits per game this spring.

Individually, Bower's 18 steals this season are good enough for 4th on FPU's single-season list, while Matt Bergandi's six saves tie him for fifth.
Additionally, Bower finishes his career as the program's all-time leader in games (202), at-bats (677), runs (158), walks (83) and steals (59).
