Point Loma Sweeps Doubleheader from Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif.  – The Fresno Pacific University baseball team was tripped up on Monday, dropping both ends of a twin bill against Point Loma. The Sea Lions took the opener 7-3 in 13 innings before finishing off the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 victory.

The Sunbirds started the scoring with a two-run bottom of the first, but the home nine mustered just one hit over the next nine innings. The Sea Lion offense erupted for four runs in the 13th, providing plenty of cushion for Noah Huggins to pick up the win.

PLNU starter Stephen Young allowed three runs over the first seven innings before giving way to the bullpen. Huggins tossed the final six innings on the mound, scattering four hits, four walks and four strikeouts en route to his second victory.

Command issues plagued FPU right hander Trent Ashford for most of the day, but the junior was still able to pitch into the seventh frame having allowed just three earned runs. Zach Fleeman highlighted the effort for the Sunbird bullpen, delivering 3.2 chapters without surrendering a run.

Offensively, Hunter Villanueva gave the Blue and Orange three hits and a pair of RBI, while catcher Bryan Bucher recorded his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Four different Sea Lions picked up two hits each, with designated hitter Kellen Sheppard driving in three runs.

The nightcap began with Point Loma scoring the first four runs of the game, but FPU's Derek Arkelian broke the trend with an RBI single in the fifth. Each team scored once in the eighth, and the Sea Lions tacked on their final insurance run in the ninth.

Matt Bergandi used a career-high 146 pitches to get the Sunbirds into the eighth inning, allowing five runs on 10 hits while fanning four. Southpaw Nic Garcia finished the game, allowing a run over the final 2.1 innings.

For PLNU, righthander Kevin Lillicrop provided eight strong innings, surrendering just two runs while striking out four and walking one. Patrick McMullen came on in the ninth, retiring the side on just six pitches to secure the second Sea Lion victory of the day.

Wyatt Champlin's three hits helped pace the Point Loma offense, while first baseman Ryan Garcia hit his team-best 14th home run of the season. Arkelian and Braden Frankfort teamed up for four of FPU's seven hits, with Arkelian and Tristen Alvarez each driving in a run.

The Sunbirds will wrap up the season on Tuesday afternoon, when they host Point Loma for another afternoon doubleheader. First pitch from FPU Diamond is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
