Sunbirds battle back to split at Biola

After dropping the first game 8-1, Fresno Pacific came out swinging in game two to defeat Biola 8-5 and earn a series split with the Eagles.

A 4-for-4 game by Karlan Andrews out of the leadoff spot was instrumental in the game two win as the Sunbirds came back from a 5-3 deficit in the fifth inning. Alec Mehrten went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, Travis Morgan finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Michael Rivera earned a two-inning save, striking out the final two batters of the game.

Matt Mazzoni earned the win for the Sunbirds, striking out eight batters in six innings of work. Josh Medeles worked a scoreless seventh to hold the lead.

After giving up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Sunbirds came back to score three in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Andrews and a two-RBI single from Alan Sandoval. Mehrten blasted a homer to left in the top of the ninth to provide an insurance run.

In game one, the Eagles pounded out 12 hits on their way to the 8-1 win. FPU's Chris Herrera struck out five but was touched up for seven runs in 5 2/3 innings. Biola's Nick Turner earned the win with seven scoreless innings and seven strikeouts.

Tyler Sturgill tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Sunbirds in the loss. FPU's lone run came in the eighth inning off an Eagle error.

The Sunbirds are now 23-21 on the season and 12-16 in GSAC play. Biola is 19-23 overall, 12-12 in the GSAC.

FPU travels south for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Cal State San Marcos with the first game beginning at 11 am.
