Sunbirds split at Westmont

Box Score 1
Box Score 2

#17 Fresno Pacific bounced back from a game one loss to defeat Westmont 7-3 behind a strong pitching performance from Derek Benny, who went eight innings giving up just two earned runs. Robbie De La Cruz homered and Michael Rivera was 2-for-3 with four RBI in the win.

A lackluster sixth inning led to three unearned runs as FPU fell 3-2 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader in Santa Barbara. Matt Mazzoni tossed a complete game for the Sunbirds without allowing an earned run.

The Sunbirds (12-5, 3-1 GSAC) would have liked to have headed home with a sweep but blew a 2-0 lead in game one after an error, a hit-by-pitch, and a two-out triple.

Westmont starter Daniel Cabuling overcame six walks to earn the win. Rivera went 3-for-4 in the loss for FPU and Alec Mehrten added two hits.

Game two was a different story as Karlan Andrews went 4-for-5 out of the leadoff spot to get things rolling. The team trailed 3-1 before an RBI single by Rivera and a two-run homer by De La Cruz regained the lead.

FPU added three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double from Rivera. Josh Medeles would come on to strike out three batters in the ninth to end it.

The Sunbirds go on the road again this Thursday, facing The Master's for a doubleheader in Santa Clarita before returning home on Saturday to face the Mustangs in Fresno.
