Michael Vaughn hit two homeruns in game one and
Wilson Ashford tossed a complete game in game two as #17 Fresno Pacific opened GSAC play by sweeping Westmont 9-5 and 8-3 in Fresno on Thursday.
The Sunbirds (11-4, 2-0 GSAC) began their final GSAC campaign by exploding for five runs in the fourth inning of each game to erase early deficits. Vaughn went 3-for-4 with the two homers and three RBI in game one and
John Koretoff hit a bases clearing three-RBI double that gave the team a 5-3 lead.
Westmont (5-8, 0-2 GSAC) started ace pitcher Torin Shaikh in game one, who entered the game having given up just one earned run in 20 innings this season, but the Sunbirds roughed him up for eight runs in five innings.
Chris Herrera threw an effective seven innings for FPU to earn the win, giving up four runs and scattering nine hits to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Ryan Cheek got the Sunbirds out of a jam in the eighth, then finished out the ninth for the save.
Alec Mehrten finished 2-for-4 with two runs in the win.
The Sunbirds fell behind 3-1 in game two before getting to Westmont starter Geoff Rocha in the fourth. Vaughn began the inning with a single and after a hit-by-pitch,
Michael Rivera delivered a two-RBI double, making his first start of the season at DH after missing the first two weeks due to injury.
FPU would add three more on a
Karlan Andrews RBI single and a two-RBI double by
Steven Lozier to take the 6-3 lead. Ashford (3-0) settled down on the mound for FPU and went seven strong innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out five.
The Sunbirds travel to Santa Barbara on Saturday to complete the series with the Warriors, with the doubleheader beginning at 11 am.
