Fresno Pacific and Holy Names played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday on the campus of Cal State East Bay, as the Sunbirds were unable to capitalize on a two-player advantage for most of the match.
After falling behind 1-0, HNU's Britney Machado was hit with a red card in the 18th minute before
Jae Slocum scored the equalizer goal for FPU on an assist from
Caressa Archie in the 26th minute.
The teams went into the halftime break tied 1-1 before HNU's Erica Udell also received a red card early in the second half. That put FPU's 11 players against HNU's nine, as the remaining 35 minutes of the second half plus two overtime periods would be controlled possession-wise by FPU.
The Sunbirds out-shot the Hawks 25-6, including 16-2 after the first half and 8-0 in the overtime periods. FPU would have plenty of chances, but none of those shots would find the back of the net as HNU's Tiana Miyashiro posted 11 saves on the night.
Sarah King was strong in goal for FPU with five saves, with HNU's lone goal coming on a booming kick from 30 yards out by Udell that went just over the head of King.
Slocum had six shots on the day to lead FPU.
Demi Hamilton and
Sara Vega each got off four.
FPU is now 5-5-5 on the season and 5-3-4 in PacWest play. HNU picked up its first tie of the season, improving to 0-10-1 in the PacWest, 1-13-1 overall.
The Sunbirds now turn their attention to Point Loma, which comes in with an 11-3-1 record (8-2-1 PacWest). FPU hosts the Sea Lions on Thursday at 7:30 pm. It will be senior day for many impactful players in their final home game:
