AZUSA, Calif – No. 2 Fresno Pacific swept all six singles matches to beat No. 5 Asuza Pacific by a 8-1 score on Thursday afternoon at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.

The Sunbirds are unbeaten on the season at 8-0 (5-0 GSAC).  Azusa Pacific drops to 4-4 (3-2 GSAC).

Sunbird junior Fabio Silva's three set win over the Cougars' No. 1, Matthijs Bolsius, clinched the team match.  Silva staked his opponent a one set lead, but dominated the next two sets to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. 

However, the match of the day was contested at No. 5 singles between Sunbird senior Marco Foelz and Azusa Pacific's Ron Chow. 

Foelz dropped the first set 5-7, and evened the match by winning the second set 6-4.  In the decisive third set, Foelz trailed by two breaks of serve 0-3.  Foelz stormed back to take a 5-4 lead, but fell behind 5-6 when he double faulted at 30-40.

Chow held three match points on his serve at 6-5, 40-0 when Foelz forced a tiebreaker on a Chow double fault. 

In a close tiebreaker, Foelz fought off a fourth match point to even the tiebreaker at 6-6.  A sensational point won by Foelz gave him his first, and only match point when Chow missed an overhead on top of the net.

Serving 6-7, Chow netted his first serve.  Foelz danced around the baseline as Chow was ready to hit his second serve.  The nerves were too much for Chow, as his serve landed several feet long to give Foelz a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(6) victory to complete a singles sweep for the Sunbirds.

Fresno Pacific makes a second trip to southern California this week, as they travel to visit No. 6 Vanguard (5-3, 3-3 GSAC) on Saturday, March 7th beginning at 11:00am.
