FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific tennis teams valiantly defeated Biola on Tuesday afternoon at Haak Tennis Complex, winning the doubles point and challenging the Eagles to the very end. The men's team took down the nationally ranked Eagles 4-3 and the women had a dominant 5-2 showing earlier in the day.
The Lady 'Birds secured the doubles point with victories on the first two courts.
Jessica McLean and
Halle Faherty dominated at No. 2 doubles, taking a 6-2 win over Biola's Dafne Andres and Isabelle Karam. The point was clinched by
Fabiana Gonzalez and
Yume Ueoku at No. 1 doubles, where they edged out Alessia Radu and Kailee Mazzeo, 7-5. Biola claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles with Yeo Kyung Kim and Alexis Romano defeating
Malia Mitchell and Margarita Munoz.
In singles, FPU extended its lead with a strong start on court four as Yeo Kyung Kim of Biola swept past Munoz, 6-0, 6-2. FPU responded at No. 1 singles, where Ueoku defeated Mazzeo, 6-1, 6-3, leveling the score. The junior from Fukuoka, Japan remains undefeated in singles, going 10-0 this season including matchups against Division I opponents. Biola regained the advantage at No. 3 singles with Andres overcoming Faherty, 6-4, 6-3. The Sunbirds gained momentum at No. 5 singles, with McLean securing a 6-3, 6-4 win against Karam. Gonzalez then added a crucial point at No. 2 singles, overcoming Radu 6-4, 7-6 with a tiebreaker to clinch the win. The match concluded with a thrilling three-set battle at No. 6 singles, where Mitchell outlasted Romano of Biola, 7-6, 6-7, 10-7, sealing the overall victory for FPU.
On the men's side, the 'Birds captured the doubles point with decisive victories on courts one and two.
Emilio Seelbach and
Jordi Gonzalez secured a 6-0 win over Biola's Kian Azadi and Thiago Canessa in the number two spot, setting the tone for the match.
Cedric Kaufman and
Joaquin Salinas clinched the point with a 7-6 win over Flores Monteverde and Masafret Hernandez on court one. Biola took the No. 3 doubles match as Keyon Gahvarehchi and Mateo Rivas narrowly beat
Felix Devallius and
Tim Bangert, 7-6.
In singles, the Biola Eagles responded by earning wins on the first courts. Adam Large defeated Kaufman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Flores Monteverde followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Seelbach at No. 2 singles. Fresno Pacific leveled the match at No. 3 singles when Angel Espana posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Canessa. Another FPU point came on court six, where Bangert secured a 6-2, 6-4 win against Azadi. Biola then tied the match again as Rivas clinched his team's third point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Devallius at No. 5 singles. The match concluded with freshman superstar Gonzalez giving Fresno Pacific the edge, defeating Gahvarehchi 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, clinching the crucial win over the 27th team in the nation.
The Sunbird men are 2-5 overall and the Lady 'Birds are 6-4 overall.
