FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific men's tennis, the PacWest Team of the Week, edged out Westmont with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday at the Haak Tennis Complex. The Sunbirds secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and two, setting the stage for the close matches ahead.
FPU captured the doubles point thanks to the combined efforts of
Cedric Kaufman and
Joaquin Salinas securing a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, followed by
Emilio Seelbach and
Jordi Gonzalez's 7-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. The Westmont men were able to claim No. 3 doubles as Arjun Sivakumar and Jon Ball edged out
Tim Bangert and
Felix Devallius, 6-5.
In singles, the Warriors quickly equalized when Driss Sedrati defeated Angel Espana 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The Sunbirds responded with a win at No. 1 singles, where Kaufmann overcame Rafael Matias 6-4, 6-3, giving the Sunbirds a 2-1 lead. Gonzalez, the PacWest Player of the Week, extended the lead to 3-1, defeating Antoine De Cooman 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Bangert clinched the match for the Sunbirds with a hard-fought victory at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 over Steinberg. Westmont men were able to capture points in two matches, due to two Sunbirds' retiring in the match, but ultimately lost to the host school. This resulted in a final score of 4-3 in favor of the Sunbirds.
The Sunbird men are 4-5 overall, ranking fifth in the PacWest Tennis Rankings.
