RIVERSIDE, CA – A close tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles was the difference in No. 4 Cal Baptist's 5-4 upset win over the No. 2 Sunbirds at the Pentz Tennis Center in Riverside on Thursday night.
Cal Baptist (10-1, 8-1 GSAC) moved into a first place tie in the GSAC with the previously undefeated Sunbirds (11-1, 8-1).
At No. 2 doubles, the Lancers' Oliver Andrzjcuzk/Martin Vaisse took an 8-7 lead against Maxime Adam/Marco Foelz, with Vaisse serving for the match. Adam/Foelz survived two match points to break serve, and force a tiebreaker.
Recovering from a 0-3 deficit in the tiebreaker, Foelz/Adam held a match point of their own at 6-5. Foelz double faulted, and the Lancers ran away with an 8-6 tiebreaker victory.
Fresno Pacific's Alex Gonzalez tied the team score 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lucas Pereira.
However, Cal Baptist registered key wins at Nos. 6, 5, and 4 singles in successive fashion to complete the upset.
Fresno Pacific's top singles players, No. 1 Fabio Silva and No. 2 Vicente Joli, each claimed late singles victories after the team match had been secured by Cal Baptist.
Fresno Pacific's next match is against Biola (1-10, 0-8 GSAC) at the Haak Tennis Center on Saturday, March 21st. Preliminary match time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
