FPU Upsets Cal State East Bay in Comeback Thriller

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team picked up their third straight victory in a come-from-behind win over conference rival Cal State East Bay. The win—FPU's first over the Pioneers—brings the Sunbird's WWPA conference record to 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Despite scoring the first goal of the game to grab an early lead, FPU fell behind the Pioneers 3-2 to close the first period.
• Through the next sixteen minutes, CSUEB remained out front, holding a 10-7 edge at the end of the third.
• The fourth frame was all FPU; shots by Sam Witt, Andria Martin and Nonie-Ann Grant brought the 'Birds within striking distance before Zaninovich netted her third goal of the match to tie things up 11-11.
• With five seconds left on the clock, Katie Kisling snuck in the game winner, beating the buzzer to hand FPU the win. Final: 12-11.
 
STATS:
Amy Zaninovich recorded her seventh hat trick of the season against the Pioneers. She also tacked on an assist for an even four points on the day.
• The 'Birds swiped eleven steals, with two apiece coming from Hannah Gish, Sam Witt, and Katie Kisling.
Madeline Frey totaled five saves in the cage for the FPU defense.
• CSUEB's Adrien Van Dyke led all scorers with four goals and two assists.
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• The last time the 'Birds squared off against the Pioneers, CSUEB came out on top by a margin of 12-11 (OT).
• With a win over the Pioneers, FPU tallied its longest win-streak since sweeping the Convergence Tournament in March 2018.
• Witt, Zaninovich, and Kisling sit atop the season goals leaderboard for FPU with 44, 42 and 35, respectively.
