IRVINE, Calif. — Competing at the WWPA Championships, Fresno Pacific women's water polo (7-19, 2-6 WWPA) fell to No. 1 East Salem University (14-5, 4-0 WWPA) with a final score of 16-5 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center on Friday. The Sunbirds managed to score three goals in the fourth quarter but could not overcome Salem University's initial lead.
No. 1 East seed Salem University dominated the opening quarter with a 5-0 lead, fending off the 'Birds offensive attempts. The Sunbirds got on the board in the second quarter when
Sierra Coyne scored at 2:10, but Salem responded with a goal, extending their lead to 6-1. With a second remaining in the third, FPU's goalkeeper
Evalena Filippi amazed everyone as her deep shot made it past the opposing keeper, making it 2-11.
The Tigers scored twice in the third quarter, helping Salem to a commanding 12-2 advantage. Fresno Pacific closed with a fourth period surge.
Summer Fulton,
Maggie Cook, and Coyne netted the final goals for the 'Birds, but Salem secured the decisive 16-5 victory, moving forward in the championship bracket.
NEXT UP: The Lady 'Birds enter round robin play with McKendree and Gannon on Saturday, April 11. The winners of the matches will compete for fifth, sixth and seventh-place.
