HILO, Hawaii – The Fresno Pacific University baseball team racked up 22 runs on Saturday, falling 9-8 against Hawai'i Hilo before rebounding with a 13-8 victory in the nightcap. The Sunbirds have now split six consecutive PacWest Conference doubleheaders and now stand 9-9 in league play.
FPU began the series with back-to-back three-run innings before the Vulcans finally answered with four scores in the home third. The Sunbirds scratched across a run in the sixth before doing so again in the seventh, but UHH stormed back with four runs over the next frames to force the game to extras.
Fresno Pacific went in order in the top of the tenth, and the Vulcans went to work on a two-out rally in the bottom half. After leftfielder Kyle Yamada singled to left and reached second on a wild pitch, third baseman Cole Nagamine singled to center, bringing Yamada in to score the game's winning run.
Rightfielder
Eddie Sievers provided FPU's first five-hit game of the season in the opener, including a double and his third home run of the year.
Joey Gallegos was the only other Sunbird hitter with a multi-hit game, helping the Blue and Orange to total at least 12 hits for the third time this spring.
Starting pitcher
Trent Ashford gave the Sunbirds allowed just one earned run over six innings before giving way to the bullpen. Lefthander
Tyler Rumbaugh gave up a run but fanned three in his two innings of work, while closer
Matt Bergandi was tagged with the loss after being on the wrong end of the Vulcans' late offensive outburst.
For Hawai'i Hilo, four different players contributed two base hits apiece, with designated hitter Edwin Stanbury finishing the opener with a pair of runs batted in. Reliever Deric Valoroso picked up the win as the third Vulcan reliever of the day after retiring all seven men he faced.
The nightcap started off much differently, as the first run of the game came on
Tristen Alvarez' sac fly in the fifth inning. The Vulcans got the run back in the home half, however, tying the game at 1-1.
Fresno Pacific's offense finally broke through in the seventh, as seven runs came across to score and push the lead to 8-1. The home nine again responded with seven runs over the next two frames to pull even, but a five-run top of the ninth helped the Sunbirds salvage the doubleheader split.
Michael Warkentin gave the Sunbirds three hits from the leadoff spot, while Alvarez,
Hunter Villanueva,
Nick Dodd and
Baron Bower each contributed two RBI. Reliever
Tanner Irwin was the beneficiary of the big ninth, earning first victory of the year on the mound.
Fresno Pacific and Hawai'i Hilo will wrap up the series on Monday, when they will play another twin bill at UHH Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. PST, and the series finale is scheduled for just seven innings.Â
