FPU Baseball Picks Up Series Split against Hawai’i Hilo

HILO, Hawaii – The Fresno Pacific University baseball team came away with just one win on Monday, dropping the front end of a doubleheader 7-4 before bouncing back with a 5-1 win over Hawai'i Hilo. Monday marked the seventh consecutive doubleheader split for the Sunbirds this season, and they now stand 10-10 in PacWest Conference action.

In a similar situation to Saturday's twin bill, the Vulcans erupted for six runs in the final two innings of the opener to claim a 7-4 victory. FPU closer Matt Bergandi took his second loss of the series, while Vulcan reliever Brandyn Lee-Lehano picked up the victory on the mound.

Walk-off hero Phillip Steering's three-run homer proved to be the difference, while three other UHH hitters went for two base knocks apiece. Hunter Villanueva came within a single of being the first Sunbird to hit for the cycle this season, while Joey Gallegos, Travis Anderson and Tristen Alvarez each contributed two hits in the loss.

The Blue and Orange scratched across four runs in the first three innings of the nightcap and added the final run on Bryan Bucher's bunt in the sixth. The lone Vulcan tally of the game came in the first frame, when centerfielder Dylan Sugimoto trotted in to score on a wild pitch.

Righthander Nic Boatman went the distance on the mound, scattering just two hits while fanning three in the longest outing of his career. McKay France was the lone Sunbird with a multi-hit effort at the dish, though Gallegos and Bucher were each credited with two RBI.

For the home nine, Steering and shortstop Jacob Grijalva teamed up to provide all the offense but couldn't overcome a dominant pitching performance from Boatman. Starter Kamalu Kamoku lasted just three innings, allowing four runs on four hits before Eric Vega tossed the final four frames of the series.

Fresno Pacific will be back in action on Thursday, when they take on Hawai'i Pacific in the first of another four-game PacWest series. First pitch from Honolulu's Hans L'Orange Park is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. on the West Coast.
