Sunbirds Sink Eagles 7-6

IRVINE, Calif. - Fresno Pacific used a balanced attack and a stifling defense to down Concordia, 7-6, on Friday in Golden Coast Conference (GCC) play.

The Sunbirds improve to 14-12 overall and 1-5 in the GCC with the win. The victory also sets a new program record for wins in a season for FPU. Concordia, meanwhile, falls to 7-14 overall and 0-2 in league play.

FPU started off slow and trailed 3-2 at the intermission. After each team found the back of the cage three times in the third period, the Sunbirds shutout the Eagles in the final quarter to make the difference. FPU capitalized with two goals of their own to make the final 7-6.

Julia Ponce, Kaitlin Groothuyzen and Sam Witt led the Sunbirds with two goals apiece. Savannah Mangrum added the final score for FPU, while Groothuyzen dished out two assists.

Kaylin Drum headed the defensive attack for the Sunbirds with 10 saves and three steals. Amber Penney grabbed three steals.

FPU excelled in power-play opportunities, making 5-of-8 attempts. CUI was held to 1-of-4.

The Sunbirds now travel to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, April 14 to face the Otters in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
