ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Amber Penney's goal with one second to play handed Fresno Pacific an 11-10 win over Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Sunbirds improve to 2-5 overall on the season with the win, while SSU falls to 3-11 on the young season.
"I'm really proud of our girls," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "It's tough to rebound after a couple of close losses. They went into this game focused and with a chip on their shoulder. It truly took a team effort today, as we had multiple girls taking shots and making steals."
The game was tight throughout and featured 10 lead changes before the Sunbirds finally came out on top. FPU trailed 10-9 with only 1:41 to play before Penney's heroics. The freshman scored with 1:26 to play to tie the game at 10, and then following a timeout with six seconds to play, the Sunbirds went to Penney one final time as she found the back the cage in the final second to give FPU the win.
Penney led the way with six goals on the day, which marks her fourth consecutive game with at least five.
Julia Ponce added two goals and two assists, while
Hannah Holly,
Sam Witt and
Savannah Mangrum rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.
Kaylin Drum led the Sunbirds' defensively, as the senior totaled nine saves in the first half.
Courtney Hall played the second half and totaled five blocks.
FPU finished 3-of-7 on man-up opportunities and held a better shooting percentage than the Seawolves.
Lyndsie Williams led SSU with four goals.
"This is a great momentum builder as we head into tournament play starting next weekend," noted Suhovy. "We continue to grow and move in the right direction."
The Sunbirds head to the Tina Finali Invitational with play beginning on Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. against Siena.
