FULLERTON, Calif. - The Western Water Polo Association announced their player of the week winners on Wednesday afternoon. For the first time this season, goalkeeper
Evalena Filippi earned Defensive Player of the Week after holding off the Bobcat's advances in the overtime season finale!
The sophomore goalkeeper has started every match this season and ended the regular season with a groundbreaking 19 saves against UC Merced. After the Bobcats tallied five goals in the first period, the Sunbird goalkeeper shut them out in the second period and the full six minutes of overtime, defensively clinching the 10-9 win for the 'Birds. She boasted a .679 save percentage over the course of 38 minutes, allowing nine goals. In the WWPA, Filippi is ranked third in saves with 182 under her belt. She is the second Sunbird to earn a conference defensive honor this season, joining fellow teammate
Dakota Lambert.
The Sunbirds hold a record of 7-19 overall and 2-6 in conference play. FPU will be the No. 4 seed in the west for the WWPA Chamionships held in Irvine, Calif. All conference teams (East and West) will compete for the conference championships title on April 10-11. The 'Birds will take on No. 1 East Seed Salem in quarterfinals on Friday, April 10 at 1pm!
