Sunbirds, Penguins Set to Battle on Saturday

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team is hosting Dominican on Saturday in its lone game of the week.

MAKE-A-WISH
• The Fresno Pacific Department of Athletics is being awarded the 2016-17 PacWest Make-A-Wish Award on Saturday during halftime. FPU raised $3,478.74 for the organization last year, bringing its four-year total to over $16,800. The PacWest Commissioner, Bob Hogue, will be in Fresno to present the award.
 
TOYS FOR TOTS
• Help us make a difference! At the next two home games, FPU will be collecting new & unused toys to benefit Toys for Tots. Admission to the game will be waived with a donation of a toy.

ABOUT THE SUNBIRDS
• FPU heads into Saturday's matchup coming off a 77-72 win over Holy Names on Dec. 2. Jake Straughan led the Sunbirds with 15 points, while Toby Christensen added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win.
• The Sunbirds are scoring 75.1 points per night while shooting an impressive .494 from the floor, which tops the PacWest. Straughan leads FPU in scoring at 14.3 points per game and has made at least one three pointer in eight of nine games. Sam Burt is adding 13.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, which is good enough for fourth in the conference, and has added four double-doubles.

AWESOME ANTUNEZ
• Adrian Antunez was recently named the PacWest Freshman of the Week (11/13). Antunez, a product of Clovis West High School, started both games for FPU at the West Region Crossover Classic. In his collegiate debut, Antunez scored 13 points and grabbed five steals against St. Martin's. He then added 10 points, four rebounds and two steals in a setback to Western Oregon. His total of seven steals led the PacWest for the first week of the season. His weekly averages totaled 11.5 points and 3.5 steals per game while playing 28 minutes per night.
 
PACWEST PRESEASON POLL
• The Sunbirds were picked to finish 11th in the 2017-18 Pacific West Conference standings according to a poll of the league's head coaches. California Baptist received 178 points and 10 first-place votes to top the poll. Dixie State was second with 169 points and two first-place votes. Following the two were Point Loma and Concordia in third and fourth, respectively. The Sea Lions garnered 161 points and two first-place votes, while the Eagles amassed 154 points. Rounding out the poll was Azusa Pacific (142 points), Chaminade (132), Hawai'i Pacific (121), Dominican (94), Biola (79), Hawai'i Hilo (72), FPU (63), Holy Names (43), Academy of Art (37) and Notre Dame de Namur (25).

ABOUT THE PENGUINS
• Dominican currently sits at 2-7 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Penguins most recently defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 67-66, last Saturday behind a last second three from Xavier Williams.
• DUC is averaging 68.9 points per game and is shooting .438 as a team. Jeremiah Gray is leading the team in scoring at 22.2 points per game, which is second in the PacWest. He is shooting .450 from three and leads the league in threes made with 37.
 
CONFERENCE SERIES HISTORY
• The Sunbirds and Penguins will be meeting for the 11th time in PacWest play, with Dominican holding a 7-3 all-time mark. The Penguins have won the last four meetings, including an 88-86 win in Fresno and a 90-76 victory in San Rafael last season.
