OAKLAND - FPU snapped an eight-game losing streak on Friday with a four-run rally in the top of the seventh (7-inning game), all with two outs, at Academy of Art to force extra innings and ultimately win 9-7. The Sunbirds (6-11, 1-2 PacWest) dropped the first game after leading 2-1 in the ninth before the Urban Knights won it with a walk-off single.
Preston Scott went 4-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI over the two games and
Nick Pate finished 4-for-8 with six RBI including a three-run homer in the first inning of game two. Pate also made his FPU debut on the mound, closing out the second game in dramatic fashion to earn the save.
Jake Martinez threw a complete game with seven strikeouts in game one, taking a 2-1 lead into the ninth but suffering the loss after surrendering the final two runs.
Gene Cachu earned the win in game two by tossing a quality 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Starter
Austin Tatum was going strong for the first four innings but the Urban Knights chased him from the game in the fifth, scoring six runs in the inning off three Sunbird pitchers.
The Urban Knights took a 7-3 lead into the final inning of the seven-inning second game and came within one strike of putting FPU away on two occasions but the Sunbirds refused to go quietly.
Joey Gallegos led off the inning with a walk and
Derek Arkelian followed with a single. The next two batters got out but
Tristen Alvarez drew a walk on a full count to load the bases. That put the Sunbirds' hottest hitter at the plate and Scott delivered with a two-run single to left to make the score 7-5.
Pate then followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Scott then came around to score on a wild pitch that tied the game. The Sunbirds took the lead for good two innings later on consecutive singles by Scott, Pate and
Rickie Garcia.
It was FPU's first road win of the season (1-9)
The series finale, originally scheduled for 4 pm today, has been postponed due to inclement weather in the Bay Area and will be made up at a later date to be determined.
