HONOLULU - #6 Fresno Pacific received an unfriendly welcome in its first ever series on the Hawaiian islands, falling 10-2 and 11-3 to Hawaii Pacific in the PacWest Conference openers for both teams.
The Sunbirds (9-4) fell behind early in both games and were unable to generate much offense in response while missing two of their top hitters,
Baron Bower and
Michael Hostetler, due to injury.
FPU hitters struck out 25 times in on the day as HPU ace Rico Garcia fanned 10 over six innings for the win in game one, before Nick Camarena struck out eight in eight innings for the game two win. The Sharks (5-2) also had one of the league's top lineups on display, defeating top Sunbird starters
Jake Martinez and
Wilson Ashford.
Nick Stoll and
Preston Scott collected two hits apiece in game one for FPU.
John Koretoff added two hits and an RBI double in game two, while
Nick Pate had two hits and an RBI triple.
Michael Tittle collected three hits on the day.
Nolan Barraza went 5-for-9 with six RBI over the two games to lead the Sharks.
The two teams meet up tomorrow to conclude the series with a doubleheader beginning at 4 pm HST and 6 pm PST.
