Sharks defend their territory as FPU drops two nailbiters

HONOLULU - Michael Tittle and Preston Scott each homered for FPU but Hawaii Pacific defended its home field for the second straight night against the #6-ranked Sunbirds, winning two closely contested games 5-4 and 3-2.

The Sharks (7-2, 4-0 PacWest) scored two in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off win in game one and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth in game two.

The Sunbirds (9-6, 0-4 PacWest) got two hits apiece from Tittle, Scott and McKay France in game one. Scott added an RBI triple in game two. Drew Merlo tossed a complete game in the second game, giving up three runs and striking out five.

Overall the Sunbird offense continued to struggle while missing Baron Bower and Michael Hostetler, striking out 18 times on the night. Bower, who had missed the last two weeks with a leg injury following an outfield collision, started game one and delivered a single in his first at bat before re-injuring the leg later in the inning attempting to score from third.

It was the first time the Sunbirds had been swept in a four-game series since April 2013 at Point Loma.

FPU continues the Hawaii road trip on Wednesday, beginning a four-game series with Hawaii Hilo.
