Azusa, Calif. -- The Sunbirds took a 2-1 lead into singles play and held off a charging Azusa Pacific squad to earn a 5-4 win over the tenth-ranked Cougars.
Freshmen
Leonardo Urquidi and
Brendan Aguilar led the way for Fresno Pacific (15-5) winning their doubles match before both went on to win singles matches in straight sets. Urquidi pulled out a 7-6 (16-14) marathon win in the second set of the No. 5 singles match to seal the victory for the Sunbirds. Aguilar posted a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory over Alan Leahy at No. 4 singles.
Kyle Rowe also earned a straight set singles win 6-4, 6-3 over Pascal Engel.
The Sunbirds jumped out to early leads in all three doubles matches looking in complete control of the match after an 8-2 win by Urquidi and Aguilar at the No. 2 spot. Jan Meyer and Gary Yam rallied past Rowe and
Thomas Gely to tie the match 1-1 with one doubles match to go.
Michael Tymkiw and
Stefan Loop provided the boost for the Sunbirds taking an 8-5 win and the lead into doubles.
Fresno Pacific will return home on Saturday to face Biola with doubles play set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
