Thirteenth ranked Sunbirds rally to beat Holy Names 7-2

Oakland, Calif. -- The 13th ranked Sunbirds men's tennis team rallied after falling behind Holy Names 2-1 during doubles to sweep the singles matches and secure their first win of the season 7-2.
"Today showed that we still need a lot of work in doubles. Holy Names is a scrappy team, but we have the talent to come away with wins at all three doubles spots every match," said head coach Neil Castro. "The singles were much different for us. The way we played in the singles matches is the way we need to play all our matches."
The Sunbirds coughed a pair of doubles matches at the two and three spots as Michael Tymkiw and Brendan Aguilar dropped an 8-6 decision to Tracy Beblie and Rafael Martinez. In the No. 3 match Leonardo Urquidi and Stefan Loop fell 8-4 to Patrick Johnson and Andrew Amor.
Then, the rally started.
Fresno Pacific came out on fire taking decisive victories in the first sets of five out of six singles matches. Aguilar went on to dispense of Martinez in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, and Urquidi dropped Amor 6-3, 6-3 in similar straight-set fashion.
Kyle Rowe once again was dominant for FPU throughout the day. Rowe and doubles teammate Thomas Gely, the second ranked doubles team in the nation, scored the lone point for the Sunbirds in doubles with an 8-6 over Matthew Halligan and Brook Workeneh. In singles Rowe dispensed Workneh in two sets 6-4, 6-1.
Tymkiw got his first win as the No. 1 singles player 6-4, 6-3 over Beblie to secure the win for Fresno Pacific.
"Michael played well at No. 1 today which was big for him," said Castro. "It is very different playing in the top spot versus the four or five. You don't get any days off at the top of the lineup."
The Sunbirds will be back on the court tomorrow when they take on Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. Matches will begin at 1:00 p.m.
