Sunbirds snap APU's regular season win streak

No. 13 Fresno Pacific put together its best doubles performance of the season as they defeated No. 12 Azusa Pacific and snapped the Cougars' 29-match regular season win streak. It was the first loss suffered by APU since a 6-3 loss to the Sunbirds on April 12, 2012.

"It was a great win by our guys," said head coach Neil Castro. "Beating Azusa is always fun for us, but today it was big because we put together a complete match doubles and singles for the first time this season."

Thomas Gely and Kyle Rowe came up huge in doubles as the Sunbirds swept aside the Cougars at all three spots by scores of 8-4. Leonardo Urquidi and Brendan Aguilar scored their second-straight win in doubles at the No. 3 spot.

FPU won two of the first three singles matches to wrap up their fourth-straight win with victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Aguilar scored a 6-3, 6-0 win over regionally ranked Gary Yam. Urquidi also earned a straight set win defeating Pascal Engel 6-1, 6-1. Rowe gutted out a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alan Leahy at No. 3 singles to give the Sunbird's their sixth point.

Fresno Pacific will head to La Mirada Thursday to take on former GSAC rival Biola at 2:00 p.m.
