Las Vegas, Nev. – It was a rocky start to the Las Vegas Classic for the Sunbirds who dropped their first two matches of the annual tennis tournament to No. 5 Hawaii Pacific and No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic.
Both matches ended in 0-9 losses for FPU, the first time that any men's team has been swept in the programs history.
On Monday, the Sea Warriors from Hawaii Pacific jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after handily sweeping two of the three doubles matches, and picking up a right 8-6 win over
Kirill Sinitsyn and
Kyle Rowe at No. 1 doubles.
Amarit Sanchez dropped his first match at No. 3 singles with a 7-6, 2-6, 5-10 loss to Gerald Moretti. Rowe also fell in three sets at No. 4 singles where Adriano Locorotondo 6-4, 6-7, 7-10, in both matches the Sunbirds held a lead after set one.
Marco Gabriel was in a battle at No. 2 singles, his first appearance at the No. 2 spot. Gabriel fell behind one set to none before battling back with a 6-4 set two win. The match was tied at 3-3 in the third and decisive set when Gabriel injured his ankle and was forced to retire.
The Sunbirds fell in a similar 0-9 loss to the No. 1 team in Division II Armstrong Atlantic. The three-time, and reigning, national champion Pirates were all over the Sunbirds who were defeated in straight sets at every match with the exception of No. 1 singles.
No. 12 ranked Sinitsyn was charged with taking on the nations top-ranked singles player in Georgi Rumenov. Rumenov blanked the Sunbird senior in set one 0-6 before Sinitsyn fired back with a 6-2 victory in set two. In the final frame however Rumenov buckled down to complete the sweep of FPU with a 2-10 set three win.
Fresno Pacific will round out the Las Vegas Classic tomorrow with another tough draw when they face No. 14 Abilene Christian at 1:00 pm.
