It was a key win for the Sunbirds, taking down a Chaminade team that defeated NCAA Division I Texas by 13 points earlier this season. The Sunbirds did a solid job of defending Chaminade star player DeAndre Haskins, who came in as the PacWest's 2nd-leading scorer (18.6 ppg). Haskins had nine points until the game's final two minutes.
"We definitely could have defended a whole lot better as a whole," said head coach Chris Wright. "But we did a good job on Haskins. We rotated defenders on him. Anthony did a great job on him, Trevon did a great job on him. We didn't want to give him any space."
The Sunbirds jumped ahead 15-5 early on and never looked back, leading by as many as 20 in the first half. FPU shot 55 percent from the field on the night, 46 percent from three-point range, turned the ball over just eight times, and didn't allow the Silverswords to get any closer than 13 in the second half.
FPU did a good job of sharing the ball, posting 25 assists as a team including five off the bench from
Anthony Brant.
Kevin Hu came off the bench to lead Chaminade with 22 points. Bennie Murray added 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The Sunbirds host traditional PacWest power BYU-Hawaii on Monday night at 7:30. The Seasiders come in with a 6-1 league record.
"They're good," said Wright. "They played in the national championship game a couple years ago and Coach Wagner's a heck of a coach. I told the guys to enjoy this win tonight but tomorrow we've got to get back to work.
"Our league is ridiculous. The top 9-10 teams are really really good. You have to bring it every night. You look at the standings and it's just a muddled mess right now."
