Defense continues to dominate as Sunbirds capture first PacWest win

Box Score

Fresno Pacific put together its third shutout of the season and Demi Hamilton scored in the 76th minute as the Sunbirds started off their Hawaii road trip with a 1-0 win over Hawaii Hilo, earning their first ever PacWest win.

The defense was in top form once again, as Colleen Rooney, Caressa Archie, Clara Buettner and Dora Vega kept the Vulcans from even getting a single shot off in the first half. Vega created some chances on the offensive end as well. Sarah King recorded her third shutout in goal.

"We're very happy with the way the defense has been playing," said head coach Erik Farfan. "We know if we can create offensive opportunities that we have a good chance to win because our defense has been playing so strong."

The team had numerous chances but Hamilton would deliver the game-changing moment in the 76th minute when she took a through ball, cut from left and right, and hammered a shot from around 25 yards out that found the left corner of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Hamilton, who led FPU in scoring with six goals last year.

The Sunbirds improved to 1-1-1 in PacWest play, 1-3-2 overall. UH Hilo dropped to 3-3, 1-2 PWC. FPU takes on BYU-Hawaii, arguably its toughest matchup of the Hawaii trip, on Monday.

"Yes it's Hawaii, but it's certainly not vacation," said Farfan. "The girls know we are here on business and we took care of business today."
