Jaimie Lugo scored three goals and
Kelsie Harvey had five saves as Fresno Pacific defeated NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino 15-13 on the road Saturday.
Malory Rettig,
Nicolette Haley,
Dani Mortimer and
Katlin Hicks added two goals apiece in the win for the Sunbirds, while Raenn Sadler and
Krista Loper also scored for FPU.
The Sunbirds jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. The Coyotes would cut into FPU's lead in the next quarter, but the Sunbirds still led 9-5 at halftime.
FPU led 14-10 as Hicks scored early in the fourth quarter but the Coyotes battled back with three quick scores to trim the lead to one with 3:25 remaining. With the Sunbirds needing a goal, Lugo provided it with 1:15 left to give the team a two-goal cushion. Harvey and the Sunbird defense would hold things down from that point.
"We came out strong and even though CSUSB fought back into it, we managed to maintain the lead, fight through to the end and walk away with the win," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy.
The Sunbirds (6-23) host CSUSB (4-26) next Saturday at 1 pm at Sunnyside High.
