Fresno Pacific battled from start to finish but visiting Sonoma State earned an 11-8 win over the Sunbirds at Sunnyside Aquatics Center on Friday, beating FPU for the second time this season.
Dani Mortimer had three goals to lead the Sunbirds (4-13). Malory Retig and
Jaimie Lugo added two apiece and
Kelsie Harvey turned in a solid effort in goal with eight saves.
The Sunbirds trailed 5-2 before a Mortimer goal two seconds before halftime made it 5-3.
Nicolette Haley drew the Sunbirds within one early in the second half with a deep strike but the Seawolves would respond with the next two. Malory Retig made it 7-5 but four unanswered goals by Sonoma would put the game out of reach.
FPU had fallen by one earlier this season in overtime at Sonoma.
The Sunbirds take on two NCAA Division I programs tomorrow in Bakersfield at the Roadrunner Invitational, facing Wagner at 12:15 pm and Bucknell at 4 pm.
