Sunbirds fall 12-6 to East Bay

Fresno Pacific surrendered eight goals in the second half in a 12-6 loss against Cal State East Bay at Sunnyside Aquatics Complex on Friday. The Sunbirds (4-19) received three goals from Nicolette Haley in the loss while the Pioneers (9-7) were powered by six Claire Pierce goals.

FPU was in the match early following a powerful Haley goal in the first period. The Sunbirds continued to fight in the pool, playing a solid second quarter holding East Bay to one goal while scoring a goal of their own. In a set play set up by Head Coach Bryan Suhovy following a timeout, Katlin Hicks provided the goal in the second quarter following impressive ball movement across the pool leading to the open shot.

The second half proved to be the difference in the match following eight goals by the Pioneers. Despite being down in the contest, the Sunbirds went down fighting. The third quarter was highlighted by a breakaway goal from Haley, her second of the quarter, assisted by Malory Rettig as FPU tried to climb back into the game.

The Pierce led Pioneers proved too much to handle in the final quarter however, capping off her impressive afternoon scoring her sixth goal of the match. The Sunbirds tacked on two goals in the final quarter from Krista Loper and Dani Mortimer leading to the 12-6 final.

The Sunbirds travel to Bakersfield tomorrow to play Cal State Bakersfield and Redlands in the Roadrunner Invititaional at 8:35 am and 4:15 pm.
