Sunbirds fall to NCAA opponents

Fresno Pacific failed to find the win column on Sunday in Stockton, concluding the Pacific Invite with two losses against NCAA Division I foes. The Sunbirds (0-7) fell to Wagner 10-3 and host University of Pacific 13-6.

A Jaimie Lugo goal in game one would put the Sunbirds up 1-0 early in the first quarter, but Wagner would use a 6-1 run to end the first half up 6-2. FPU would only muster one goal in the second half, while the Seahawks tacked on four more.

The Sunbirds were led by two goals from Lugo and one by Dani Mortimer, while Kelsie Harvey finished with 16 saves in the loss.

In game two, FPU faced a Pacific squad that finished 4-0 on the weekend following the win over the Sunbirds. The Tigers used a five goal first quarter and a four goal final quarter to pull away from the Sunbirds, who fought hard against a Tiger team that is receiving votes in the NCAA top 20 poll.

Despite being down 6-2 at the half, Fresno Pacific would fight back and pull within three with 7:06 to play with the score 9-6 in the final quarter, but a 4-0 Pacific run would put the score out of reach.

Krista Loper scored two goals in the loss to lead the Sunbirds, while Malory Rettig, Mortimer, and Lugo each added a goal as well. Harvey added 14 saves in the loss.

"The girls played awesome against UOP," said coach Bryan Suhovy. "I really think they are starting to figure it out. And Kelsie [Harvey] played out of her mind today."

The Sunbirds will face Pacific at home (Sunnyside High School) on Saturday, February 11th at 3 pm in a rematch of today's match.
