Fresno Pacific picked up its first victory of the season, winning 13-1 over Vanguard before falling to NCAA D1 Pacific 8-2 at the Lancer Invitational in Riverside.
The outcome was never in doubt in the opening game as the Sunbirds didn't allow a goal until the final minute of the fourth quarter, snapping a 10-game losing streak.
"The level at which we played this weekend reflects a huge amount of growth and hard work from our girls," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We are very happy with their performance and excited for our upcoming games."
Jaimie Lugo led the way with three goals and the Sunbirds got two apiece from Malory Retig,
Jenna Morris and Kaitlin Hicks.
Kelsie Harvey made four saves and
Charissa Gurnea added two.
FPU led 7-0 at halftime and continued to pour it on until the Lions scored their first and only goal with 40 seconds left in the game.
In the second game of the day, FPU suffered its third loss of the season to UOP, the #21-ranked team in the NCAA. Harvey was impressive in goal, making 15 saves but the Sunbird offense couldn't muster anything more than two goals by Lugo.
The Sunbirds (1-11) compete at the Posada Royale Invitational next weekend at Cal Lutheran.
