Box Score
Wilson Ashford won his second home start in less than a week and Fresno Pacific capitalized on five Cal State Stanislaus errors to beat the Warriors 9-2 on a chilly Monday night in Fresno.
FPU improved to 9-2 on the season with the win, including 5-1 against NCAA Division II programs, which the NAIA #17 Sunbirds will be joining next year.
Alec Mehrten paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Steven Lozier finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Karlan Andrews provided a couple highlight-reel diving catches to lead the defense.
Ashford went seven innings for FPU, giving up just two runs and no walks while striking out five. He was relieved by
Ryan Cheek in the eighth who threw two perfect innings, striking out three.
The Warriors struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on three bunts, a balk and some poor defensive play by the Sunbirds. FPU got one back in the fifth when Mehrten's sacrifice fly scored
Kevin Magill, who had reached on an error to start the inning.
The Sunbirds took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Lozier, following an RBI double from Magill. After Ashford sat down the Warriors 1-2-3 in the seventh, FPU would capitalize on a number of CSUS miscues in the seventh to get six runs across on just one hit.
After four walks and a costly Warrior error that would have ended the inning with the score 7-2, Mehrten singled over the third baseman's head to score two more. Warrior relievers Dustin Baisdon and Andrew Graham walked five and gave up six runs between the two.
With the win, FPU improved to 6-1 at home. The Warriors dropped to 1-1 on the season and lost to the Sunbirds for the third straight season.
FPU will now try to duplicate that success on the road as they face Menlo in Atherton on Wednesday at 2:30 pm.
