Box Score
The Sunbirds high-powered offense came through once again in a 4-2 victory over Holy Names for FPU's eighth consecutive victory.
Gustavo Silva and Paul Islas were the top performers in the match for the Sunbirds (12-4, 9-3). Silva had a goal and two assists and Islas tallied one goal and one assist.
It was a physical first half and throughout the match as both teams were hit with 20 fouls.
“It was a very physical match,” said head coach Jaime Ramirez. “We had to adjust and calm down some because when it gets physical the tensions go up. But our guys did a good job of adjusting.”
The Hawks (6-8-1, 3-8) were first to strike on a free kick by Jaime Phillips that beat goalkeeper Fabian Rangel for the 1-0 lead.
Fresno Pacific wasted no time answering the score as Guillermo Talancon crossed a ball into the box that was deflected right to Silva who slotted it perfectly in the back of the net for the equalizer at 1-1.
Just before halftime the Sunbirds struck again this time it was Islas who recorded his 13th goal of the season on a feed from Silva that gave FPU the 2-1 lead heading into the break.
“The second half was great for us,” said Ramirez. “We came out fire right away and pulled out in front even more.”
The Sunbirds were dominant in the run of play for much of the match and saw multiple opportunities at goal early on in the second half.
Just three minutes in Fresno Pacific capitalized on one of the chances as Islas played a ball into the box and Bruno Pessoa deflected it in just past the keeper.
Alexis Hernandez scored the fourth and final goal for FPU in the 86th minute on an assist from Silva, his second of the match.
“We were all over them in their half of the field,” said Ramirez. “We just really had the advantage in the run of play.”
The Hawks would add on a goal in the 88th minute but it was not enough to overtake the Sunbirds who are now in sole possession of fourth place in the PacWest.
Fresno Pacific will be back in action this Thursday at home against Point Loma in the Sunbirds final home match of the season.
