Box Score 2
Game One
Fresno Pacific only allowed four hits, but that would be enough for San Francisco State to pull out a 2-1 win over the Sunbirds in game one of today's doubleheader.
FPU got great pitching from
Jesse Darrah,
Kyle Lovero and
Michael Jimenez, but the Sunbird lineup was unable to push runs across, stranding runners in scoring position in six of the nine innings.
Darrah, scheduled to throw just three innings, did not disappoint. He struck out five and didn't allow a hit before giving way to Lovero, who gave up two runs in his first inning of work before settling down to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Sunbirds took an early lead in the first as
Trent Soares led things off with a single and would eventuall come across on a hit by
Michael Rivera. Unfortunately that was all the Sunbirds could muster, despite 2-for-4 days from Rivera,
David Hawes and
Scott Laird.
When they needed the key hit it didn't come as SFSU starter Branden Petrangelo scattered eight hits and struck out five for a one-run complete game. Drew Anderson got the big hit for the Gators, singling with runners on second and third and two outs in the 4th.
The Sunbirds would have one last chance when Hawes singled with one out in the 9th and Laird followed with a bunt single to put two on.
Steven Lozier pinch hit but fouled out and Soares would fly out to end the game.
Game Two
SFSU 3, FPU 2. (7 innings)
The second game was similar to the first as the Sunbirds got on the board early, but failed to come through when it counted. FPU had the tying run on third with two outs in the final inning, but would strand the runner in scoring position, which the team also did in the first, second and fourth innings.
The Sunbirds got effective pitching from
Greg Kilgore, who struck out four in three innings, and #Michael Jimenez, who gave up just one hit in three scoreless innings. But much like the two previous games, SFSU would get timely hits at the right time as the Sunbirds came up just short.
FPU got the scoring going in the first inning once again, with
Wes Dorrell driving in
Trent Soares. The Sunbirds would run into trouble in the bottom of the 3rd though, when a Gator triple and double led to two runs.
Karlan Andrews and
Alec Mehrten combined to hose a runner at home and limit the damage.
The Sunbirds would continue to be patient at the plate, drawing three walks from two different SFSU pitchers to start the top of the fourth. However with the bases loaded and no outs, the team could only push one run across, a sacrifice fly by
David Hawes.
SFSU would answer in the bottom of the inning, aided by two Sunbird errors to get a sacrifice fly making the score 3-2. That would be all the Gators would need as FPU hit into a double play to end the 5th and went down in order in the 6th.
Hawes gave the team life with a single to open up the final inning and made his way around to third with two outs.
Blaine Taylor would strike out swinging to end the game.
The Gators used five different pitchers, with Jeff Clegg getting the win in relief and Kevin Dultz throwing two innings to earn the save. SFSU improved to 3-0 on the year, sweeping their season-opening series.
No Sunbird player had more than one hit as FPU dropped to 1-3 on the year. The team will look to get back on track this Monday at home, as they host Oregon Tech at 11 am.
