In its second meeting with Northwest Christian in three days, Fresno Pacific extended its margin of victory getting 24 points from Jessica Torrecillas to defeat the Beacons 81-65 at the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic in Rocklin.
The Sunbirds (2-0) defeated Northwest Christian (1-3) by five points on Wednesday in Fresno, 70-65, and looked to come out stronger defensively in the rematch. Instead it was the offense that improved as the Sunbirds shot 59 percent from the field and 82 percent from the line.
Torrecillas led the way making 9-of-12 from the field, while Jenay Herring created problems for the Beacon defense once again, scoring 16 points and dishing out four assists. Kelly Thompson finished with 15 points and Michele Rebozzi and Callie Rohrbacker had nine apiece.
“I was pleased with the focus and effort that our girls gave in the second half,” said coach Erin Scholz, as the team went on a 16-2 run late in the second half to put the game away. “We have a lot of work to do defensively,” she added.
The Sunbirds led 61-58 with 10 minutes to go, but would run off 12 unanswered points. A basket by Thompson, a three-pointer by Herring and two free-throws by Torrecillas made the score 68-58. Another three by Herring minutes later extended the Sunbird lead to 15.
By the time the Beacons ended the run the Sunbirds had the game in control and would go on to win by 16. Northwest Christian had four players finish in double figures, led by Lindsey Shearer with 13.
The Sunbirds continue the tournament tomorrow, facing Oregon Tech at 2 pm.
