Women's soccer comeback produces 2-2 tie against No. 5 Vanguard

Sunbirds rally from 2-0 deficit

FRESNO, CA.-- After conceding two first-half goals, the Fresno Pacific women's soccer team overcame a 2-0 deficit to tie No. 5 Vanguard University 2-2 Saturday evening at FPU's Ramirez Field.

Goals by Fresno Pacific's Mayra Garcia and Ashley Sherr completed the comeback for the Sunbirds to ensure the draw.

Vanguard's Gabriela Valles opened the scoring for the Lions after a miscue between FPU defender Stephanie Olff and goalkeeper Catherine Michaelis resulted in the ball at Valles' feet and an open goal which she converted for the 1-0 lead.

The Lions struck again in the 41st minute when Vanguard's Heather Mauck slotted a one-touch finish at the six-yard box delivered by teammate Krisitn Thuve to give Vanguard the 2-0 advantage.

With the game starting to slip away, the Sunbirds found a life-line in the 44th minute when Sherr slotted a ball in behind the Lion's defense to Garcia who tucked it away past VU goalkeeper Jillian Foss to make it a 2-1 match going into the halftime break.

In the second half, Fresno Pacific continued to go toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked Lions and controlled much of the action. After a number of scoring chances, the reward came in the 88th minute when Sunbird Natalie Chaney found Sherr on a through pass that Sherr  scored for the equalizer.

With minimal chances, the two teams went scoreless in the two 10-minute sudden-death overtime periods and the game concluded with a 2-2 draw. By game's end, the Sunbirds had fired off 15 shots to Vanguard's 20.

Next-up, Fresno Pacific hosts No. 2 Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 27).
