'Birds Shut Out Gators in 2-0 Road Victory

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific women's soccer secured a 2-0 road victory over San Francisco State on Friday, scoring once in each half while goalkeeper Isabella Alvarez recorded seven saves to help the 'Birds earn their second shutout of the season.

"The girls left it all on the field," said Head Coach Jaime Ramirez. "It was outstanding play all around. They worked hard to create the scoring opportunities that led to the two goals."

San Francisco State created the first opportunities of the match, but Alvarez turned away the early attempts to keep the Gators off the scoreboard. Fresno Pacific generated its first shot through Bailey Roberson at 14:22 before breaking through in the 22nd minute. At 21:40, Gizelle Aguirre found the back of the net off assists from Roberson and Brylia Bañuelos to put the 'Birds ahead 1-0. The goal marked Aguirre's second of the season after she scored in the 1-1 draw against Cal State San Marcos last week.

The Gators continued to apply pressure late in the half, but FPU's defense held firm. San Francisco State was called offside three times in the closing minutes as the 'Birds carried their one-goal advantage into halftime. Fresno Pacific maintained its defensive composure coming out of the break, limiting the Gators' early chances while looking to add to its lead. Kimberly Garcia put an attempt on frame before Damaris Lopez doubled the advantage in the 72nd minute, scoring at 71:36 to make it 2-0.

"It was very clinical and by design. The shutout by Isabella, our backup goalie due to illness to our starter, Brielle Calhoun, really contributed to the great team victory."

The match became increasingly physical down the stretch, with several fouls and cards issued between 77:46 and 87:12. Alvarez continued to come up with key saves to preserve the shutout, helping the 'Birds close out the 2-0 victory. With the win, Fresno Pacific improves to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in CCAA play.

NEXT UP: The Lady 'Birds will continue their road trip up north with their match against Cal State East Bay on Sunday, September 27 at 2pm.
