Connolly's Late PK Puts 'Birds on the Board

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Despite a 2-0 deficit in the first half, Fresno Pacific women's soccer scored in the final minute of Tuesday's non-conference matchup against UC Santa Cruz, making it a 1-4 game. The Sunbirds created their best offensive opportunities after halftime, recording all four of their shots in the second half and putting three on target.

Fresno Pacific earned a pair of corner kicks early, but UC Santa Cruz broke through in the 28th minute before adding a penalty-kick goal at 41:41 to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Slugs continued to apply pressure after the break, with Brielle Calhoun making three saves to keep the Sunbirds within striking distance. Fresno Pacific generated a sustained attacking sequence late in the half, with attempts from Rosie Farina, Royce Kilby and Lilli Scharnick testing the UC Santa Cruz defense.

In the 61st and 70th minute, UC Santa Cruz added two late goals, but the 'Birds didn't give up hope.

The Blue and Orange finally broke through in the 89th minute when Meghan Connolly converted a penalty kick, avoiding the shutout and putting Fresno Pacific on the board, 1-4.

The 'Birds move to 4-4-2 overall and 3-1-2 in CCAA play.
