Two Quick Goals Send ’Birds Flying to Victory

FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific women's soccer picked up an incredible 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, scoring twice in the opening eight minutes before holding the Toros scoreless throughout the second half.

The Sunbirds came out firing, generating two shots before Sophie Rosales found the back of the net just 1:18 into the match to give FPU an early 1-0 lead.

Less than seven minutes later, the Sunbirds doubled their advantage. Bailey Roberson finished a pass from Chloe Mortensen in the 7:43rd minute, putting FPU ahead 2-0.

Cal State Dominguez Hills responded with a goal in the 24th minute when a Toro scored off a great pass in the box. CSUDH continued to apply pressure, but goalkeeper Brielle Calhoun came up with a key save on at 25:48 to keep the Sunbirds in front. CSUDH also earned a corner kick late in the half, but FPU maintained its 2-1 advantage heading into the break.

The Sunbirds turned up the pressure late in the second half, earning two corner kicks and firing five shots between the 77th and 80th minutes. Alondra Garcia had an attempt toward the upper-left corner turned away by a team save, while Royce Kilby and Julianna Hernandez also added shots during the late offensive push.

Cal State Dominguez Hills continued searching for an equalizer, earning a late corner kick and putting two more shots toward goal, but the Sunbirds' defense held firm. FPU kept the Toros off the scoreboard in the second half to secure the 2-1 victory!

Fresno Pacific women's soccer is 4-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in CCAA play. In conference, Roberson ranks eighth in assists (3) and fifth in game-winning goals (2). Freshman goalkeeper Calhoun is first in saves-per-game (33) and fourth in saves.

NEXT UP: The Blue and Orange are back at home on Saturday, October 3rd for the match against Menlo College at 4pm.
