FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific University Athletics has announced it is actively exploring the addition of a beach volleyball program, paired with the development of a dedicated on-campus sand volleyball complex. The initiative is targeted for a fall 2027 launch, with construction on the facility expected to begin in January 2027.
"This is a defining moment, not just for Fresno Pacific University, but for the entire Fresno community," said FPU's head volleyball coach Kelsee Montagna.
Situated in the north-east corner of the Steinert Athletic Complex adjacent to the FPU Track and Ramirez Field, the proposed project includes the construction of three competition-ready beach volleyball courts that would serve as the home for the Sunbirds' future NCAA program. If completed, Fresno Pacific would become the first NCAA institution in the Fresno area to sponsor beach volleyball, as well as the first collegiate program in the city to feature its own dedicated sand courts on-campus. The addition of beach volleyball is expected to create roster space for approximately 20–25 new student-athletes, expanding participation opportunities while continuing to build the Sunbirds' competitive footprint.
"Beach volleyball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and Fresno deserves to be part of that momentum," Montagna added. "This program creates a pipeline, raises the standard, and brings something new to a region full of talent. But more than that, it's about building something that lasts and developing strong, confident women who compete fiercely and live out their faith boldly."

Beyond intercollegiate competition, the planned facility is designed to serve a broader purpose on campus and in the surrounding community. The three-court complex would be available for Fresno Pacific intramural programming and recreational use, while also positioning the university as a potential host site for local, regional, and collegiate tournaments. Notably, the facility would become the only dedicated beach volleyball complex in Southeast Fresno, offering a new resource for one of the region's most active and passionate volleyball communities.
To bring the project to life, Fresno Pacific has established a fundraising goal of $300,000. Support from donors, alumni, and community partners will play a critical role in turning the vision into reality ahead of the anticipated 2027 groundbreaking.
"Beach volleyball represents an exciting opportunity for Fresno Pacific and a natural next step in our growth," said FPU Director of Athletics Kyle Ferguson. "It will take strong partnership and fundraising support to bring it to life, and we look forward to working with those who believe in what this can become."
Partnership opportunities, including naming rights to the facility and courts, are available. For more information on the project including sponsor and partnership inquiries, please contact:

"I'm incredibly grateful for the support from our entire athletics department and university," Montagna remarked. "This doesn't happen without people who truly believe in the vision. What we'd be building here isn't just for today, it would be for the generations of student-athletes who will come through this program and carry it forward."
