LOS ANGELES, Calif.- It was time for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds distance runners to shine Saturday as they headed down to Jack Kemp Stadium to compete in the Oxy Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic.
The women kicked things off in the 800m, where freshman
Mattie Whipple recorded a top five finish coming in third with a time of 2:11.54. Behind Whipple, teammates Maria Magnusdottir,
Gianna Menchu, and Arianna Womack placed 17th, 27th and 28th respectively. Whipple and Magnusdottir kept things rolling for the 'Birds in the 1500m where Whipple took eighth with a time of 4:47.22 and Magnusdottir 4:49.92 in 11th.
Julissa Avila was top performer for the Sunbirds in the 5000m, placing 30th coming in at 18:04.08, with
Julia Martinez right behind in 32nd. In the field, a trio of Sunbirds came in the top ten in the women's hammer with
Casey Davis leading the way with a 45.39m throw on her fourth attempt, with Luca Romero at 42.62m for fifth, and Makayla Smith at 38.87 for eighth.
Senior
Bo Olsen started the men off with a bang recording the Sunbirds lone win of the day, running a blistering 1:51.14 in the 800m, improving on his season best time by .04.
Aidan Ransom and
Emanuel Salas also recorded top-twenty performances in the 800m finishing 11th and 16th.
Bryan Banuelos recorded another top ten finish for the Sunbirds, with a ninth place finish in the 5000m with a time of 14:38.24, with teammate Jansen Gilling closely following coming in at 14:43.60, good enough for 14th. In the field for the men,
William Jenkins came in seventh in the men's hammer with a throw of 47.08 on his fourth attempt of the day.

The 'Birds will head north to Sacramento for the Hornet Classic on March 21st and 22nd.
