‘Birds Drop Slugfest, Then Fall in Extras to Wildcats

CHICO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Chico State on Saturday, with the Wildcats taking the opener 21-11 and the nightcap 2-1 in extra innings.      
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Game 1 
  • Chico State started the scoring with two runs in the first inning before breaking it open with five runs in the second and five more in the third.
  • The Sunbirds found the offense in the middle frames, but both FPU's four-run innings in the fifth and sixth were both answered with multi-run bottom halves from the Wildcats. 
  • FPU plated three more in seventh for their final runs of the game, but the home team again responded with five runs in the eighth inning.
 
Game 2 
  • Haden Haynes gave the Sunbirds their lone run of the game with a solo shot to left to open the fifth inning.
  • The lead was short-lived, as Wildcat outfielders Cody Wissler and Eddie Zavala teamed up to tie the game in the home sixth.
  • The leadoff hitter walked to open the eighth before coming around to score on a walk-off single through the left side off the bat of Willie Lajoie.
 
STATS FROM THE DAY: 
  • Michael Warketin gave the Sunbirds a 4-for-6 effort from the top of the order in Game 1 while driving in two runs.
  • Andrue Lackey, Nick Dodd, Jared Aguilar and Brian Hefner each had a multi-hit Game 1, with Lackey maintaining his role as a run producer and driving in a trio of runs.
  • Esteban Lizaola tossed 7.0 strong innings in the finale, surrendering one earned run on five hits while fanning six Wildcat hitters.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Matt McGrady extended his hitting streak to five games in Saturday's opener before being held hitless for the first time this season in the nightcap. 
  • Through two series, the Sunbirds are hitting .313 as team with 18 extra-base hits. FPU has also gone 16-of-18 in stolen base attempts.

  • The Sunbirds are back at home next Thursday, when they open a four-game set against Western Oregon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from FPU Diamond.
